This important public health initiative was
instigated by the NSW Department of Health and
the Pharmacy Guild of Australia (NSW Branch)
and followed close collaboration between the NSW
Department of Health and the Australian plastics
manufacturer, ASP Plastics.
The result was FITPACK® Containers supplying sterile injecting
equipment with a unique self-disposal facility for
used (unsterile) hypodermic syringes.
Since its introduction over 66 million FITPACK® Containers have been distributed worldwide. In
Australia several million containers are distributed
each year as part of concerted national harm
reduction initiatives.
Whilst primarily targeted at users of illicit drugs, FITPACK® Containers provide comparable benefits
to mainstream community health professionals and
other direct consumers such as diabetics. FITPACK® Containers hold up to ten 1ml insulin
syringes, and can simultaneously contain both sterile and used
syringes.
